Content ID basics

How Content ID works for your catalog and what is eligible.

Updated October 6, 2026

Content ID matches videos uploaded to YouTube against your recordings. When a match is found, the video is claimed for you and you earn from the ads shown on it.

What is eligible

Content ID requires exclusive rights to the recording. These are generally not eligible:

  • Recordings that use beats or samples licensed non-exclusively.
  • Covers, unless you hold the needed rights for the recording.
  • Public domain recordings, sound effects, karaoke and meditation-style tracks with generic content.
  • Recordings already registered by another rights holder.

Turning it on

Content ID is enabled per release. Ask your partner manager, or note it when you submit a release.
